*Kate Seymour’s (CEO and Founder of Art Conservation Education) professional journey integrates art, science, and conservation. After earning an Honours degree in Art History from the University of Aberdeen in 1994, she pursued painting conservation, completing a Master’s at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle in 1999. She then joined Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg (SRAL) in the Netherlands, where she served as Head of Education for 25 years, training emerging conservators and advancing best practices in the field.
Beyond SRAL, Kate has been deeply engaged in conservation education. From 2006 to 2023, she lectured at the University of Amsterdam’s Master’s programme, teaching applied conservation science and practical techniques across ten conservation disciplines and for 15 years was one of the main supervisors within the painting conservation track. Since 2013, she has also taught at Maastricht University, guiding students in conservation science and material analysis. Through her supervision of numerous Master’s and Bachelor’s research projects, she has continually expanded her own expertise while nurturing the next generation of conservators.
Her technical expertise spans the structural treatment of canvas and panel paintings, polychrome surface cleaning, retouching, and varnishing. Internationally, she has played a pivotal role in capacity-building initiatives. She directed the Indian Conservation Fellowship Program (2013– 2023), training Indian conservators with support from the Mellon Foundation and the Government of India. She has also led conservation workshops in Russia at institutions such as the Vrubel Museum in Omsk and the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, engaging conservators from Siberia and major museums in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Additionally, she contributed as project coordinator and lecturer for the Getty Foundation’s Panel Painting Initiative and Conserving Canvas Mist Lining Workshops, delivering training in Maastricht (2019), online (2021), in Mexico (2023) and in Gdansk (2024). In 2025, she will coordinate and instruct the next edition in Brazil at CECOR, Belo Horizonte.
In 2024, Kate founded Art Conservation Education, a platform offering hands-on workshops and advanced courses for both emerging conservators and seasoned professionals seeking Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Her teaching covers a full spectrum of painting conservation topics, from investigative techniques to treatment methodologies and preventive conservation strategies.
Kate has also been a dedicated leader within ICOM-CC, currently serving her third term on the Directory Board (2023–2026) and her second as Chair. Over two decades, she has held various leadership roles, including Working Group Coordinator Liaison (2017–2020) and Coordinator for both the Education and Training in Conservation (2014–2017) and Sculpture, Polychromy, and Architectural Decoration (2008–2014) working groups. Her responsibilities have included committee management, conference organisation, and advancing global collaboration in conservation.
An advocate for professional development, Kate is a Fellow of the International Institute for Conservation (IIC) and an active member of the British Association of Paintings Conservator- Restorers (BAPCR), the Institute of Conservation (ICON), and Restauratoren Nederland (RN).
Throughout her career, Kate Seymour has been a driving force in the conservation field. Her expertise, leadership, and dedication to education and training continue to shape the future of art conservation worldwide.
